How to Maintain a Positive Attitude

Career Advice / Leadership / Mark Seyforth / July 5, 2017

In life, there are times when it can feel hard to be positive and look on the bright side of everything, but there are also many times when people are negative even though they have every reason to be optimistic. Being positive brings many great benefits, such as a healthier life, less stress, and greater ease when dealing with issues that arise. For anyone, it’ll likely be hard to adopt a positive mindset, but it’s a step you’ll need to take in order to be more effective and feel fulfilled in your professional and personal lives.

Focus on positive thoughts

If you’re trying to have a more positive attitude, your first step is making sure you focus on positive thoughts. While this step is important at any point throughout your day, it’s especially important to keep in mind when you actually feel negative thoughts intruding into your mind. If you have a lot to get done that day, instead of thinking about how you do not have nearly enough time to accomplish it, take a few minutes to make a plan on what you’ll tackle when and what your top priorities are. When you feel discouraged, remember to look on the bright side or practice a list of thoughts that cheer you up no matter what and you can remember when you’re being negative.

Take time for self-care

Taking care of yourself leaves much less time for negativity. Give yourself a few minutes to just relax and refocus. Try to find a little time each day to do something you enjoy that helps you relax, instead of constantly handling work or ruminating on your problems. If you feel good physically, you’ll find it easier to have a better attitude toward what’s going on around you.

Pursue your passions

One of the obstacles in your way may be that you do not feel fulfilled in your job. If you’re working in an industry you don’t actually have an interest in, it’s time to start looking for a new job. Even if you can’t leave your job for a better one, find hobbies you are truly passionate about that make you feel happy. If there’s something in your life you truly enjoy doing, it’ll make you feel good.

Think before you speak

A positive attitude is something that other people notice as well. If you find it hard to always interact with others positively, take time to work on that. If someone does something frustrating or you have a problem with them, think carefully about what you’ll say before saying anything. It may be better to stay silent, but if you do need to address the issue, do so in a mature and calm way that’s actually an attempt at being constructive.

End toxic relationships

Finally, if you surround yourself with negative people, you’ll find it much more difficult to adopt a positive attitude. If you have toxic relationships in your life that cause you stress or unnecessary drama, end those relationships. Whether it’s a friendship, romantic relationship, or professional partnership, you don’t need an undue amount of negativity in your life that holds you back. Get rid of toxic relationships so you can live a happier life.
